The story is of a peasant Bhiku (Om Puri) who is oppressed by landowners and his foremen. His wife Nagi (Smita Patil) gets assaulted by their foreman and commits suicide out of shame. To cover up his own crime, the foreman then frames the shell-shocked Bhiku for murdering Nagi. Bhiku’s own devastation and the fear of the foreman's power make him serve his prison sentence in silence. Though Bhaskar, a compassionate lawyer (Naseeruddin Shah), tries to bring him to justice, Bhiku still doesn't utter a word. While Bhiku is imprisoned, his father dies and the police bring him to the funeral grounds in shackles to perform the religious Last Rites of his father. There he sees the very foreman who assaulted Nagi look at his sister with lustful eyes. Divining the fate that is in store for her, he grabs an axe and chops off his sister's head to forestall her dire future as perpetual victim, as he sees it. Upon completion of this hapless act of a desperate and downtrodden man, he raises his face toward the skies and screams his lungs out. This is the first time his voice is heard since his imprisonment which serves as the voice of his adversities.
